National Poetry Month--Day zwolf--Brevette Poems--plus a Limerick--Ode to a Mockingbird

Here are my Brevette poems. If you want to know what those are, go here. Here are my poems:

mockingbirds

s i n g

freedom

Christ

l i g h t s

pathways

ladybugs

f l a u n t

spots

I'm preparing this limerick in advance. I wrote it for Sunday but it just doesn't seem appropriate for that day for some reason:

There once was a mockingbird young

At midnight this bird would give tongue

It's song was quite great

But it just sang so late

That I wanted that dadgum bird hung

Actually I love mockingbirds and listening to them at night makes me happy. But this poem just slipped out. What can I say? I just have a warped sense of humor. I'd be much more inclined to want to hurl things a dove, because for many reasons they're completely stupid birds. Mockingbirds are smart. I've even heard one sound like a car alarm.

National Poetry Month--Day Once--Color Poem--Indigo--ABCB Poem--Non-linear Time

This is my color poem that I wrote later for this day. If you want to know what a color poem is, go here. And the poem:

Indigo is a sea of time

Mysterious in its numberless depths

Unquantifiable like a black hole

Yet full of lives and life as a boundless ocean

©2021 by H. Linn Murphy

This is more like a good Sunday poem. Not that it can't be on other days. But this day is special. So here's my Sunday poem:

NON-LINEAR TIME

How is there time for minutiae

That Christ deals with every day?

For the least little thing I beguile Him.

He listens whenever I pray.

I know by the way that my problems

Seem to lighten when we've had a chat

He patiently answers my questions

Though I've wandered this way and that.

If I were Him I'd be frustrated

At the cavalier manner I use

When I hurry through conversations

But He'll never sigh or accuse.

He just patiently waits for the punchline

Or the begging or light little flick

I wonder if I ever make him

Annoyed or a little bit sick.

I need to grow up and be better

At thinking of what I will say

When I ask Him how He spent the ev'ning

Whether He had a pretty good day.

I should patiently wait for an answer

Instead of the bluster and wind.

If I calmly and quietly listen

There are answers just waiting to find.

Then go and do something about it

Do my part , make a difference, a goal

Not being lazy or doubting

Not letting life take a toll.

There'll be opportunities plenty

To be Jesus' hands in the fray

Time will stretch out to eternity

Or maybe just God's seventh day.

National Poetry Month--Day 10--Windspark Poem--Windspark Poem --ABAB Poem--Cementing Friendships

Okay the poem for the day is a Windspark Poem. I'm clueless too, so I'm going here to check it out. And here's my poem:

I dreamed

I was an alpine goat

On the side of a breezy alp

Munching away at an edelweiss

 Placidly

In case I don't get back on my computer, I'm doing this day's poem on my own. I may come back later and do Stephanie's poetry form too. But for a place saver, here's my ABAB Poem:

Got roped into laying cement

I'm doing it for a close friend

Must work in the heat 'til I'm spent

I think this job won't ever end

What's worse is it starts in the dark

When the birds are still snoring in bed

She's not taking much guff or snark

So it's doubtful I'll sleep like the dead

I can just hear the phone ringing now

It'll start when I'm one minute late

It'll ring till in anguish I bow

To her superior efforts so great.

I think I'm the only one there

Who can lift up a shovel or hoe

Likely she'll boss from her chair

I'll be on the totem pole low

I think that tonight I'll invest

In a pair of earplugs so nice

And I'll cuddle up into my nest

Til the phone call hits me like dry ice

My attitude needs an adjustment

After all she promised some cookies

Nanaimo Bars make me more content

Working for less is for rookies

But maybe the point is to help out

Whatever the weather or pain

Though I'm needing the exercise work out

It's actually the friendship I gain.

It ended up that we poured no cement. Instead she had us lay down pallets and screw the plywood to that. Then came the shed, which was not numbered correctly. This was while she was gone to a birthday party...rofl Anywho, it was too windy to finish putting up the shed. But I'm hashed.

National Poetry Month--Dia Nueve--Royal Rhyme--The Battle Royale--Free Verse--The Aftermath

Today it's going to be a Royal Rhyme, a form of septet. I know. I had no idea either. So I went here. Then I came back and wrote this:

The Battle Royale

No one wakes the badger up
Unless they want a fight
Not he, his wife, nor any pup
Or risk a vicious badger bite
Lions, cobras, feel his might
Also hippos, humans, and the bees
If you try and capture him he flees

The honey badger is a pro
At getting out of places
He uses rock or mud or hoe
And flaunts it in our faces
To make his escape he races
To fetch his favorite honey
On his success I would bet money

I wrote this second one as a freestyle poem--sort of an answer to yesterday's Claw poem.

THE AFTERMATH

The Claw came not yesterday
They must have been busy
I should have gone over to
Gather the things
I wanted to liberate.
But sometime in the night,
The metal fairies came
And took the items
For which I'd shopped but not
Taken away
Except for the glass
Because none of us
Could get the screws out.
Now I hear the scrape of the claw
It's jaws devouring
All in its path
Hungrily chomping into
The broken and forgotten
Couches and shelves
Chairs and lives
Messy eater, The Claw
It leaves behind
The little things
Like screws and splinters
And things the owners
Can clean up themselves.
Things we should have
Taken care of
But were too busy
Or lazy
Or overcome
To fix.
Those things
The Claw leaves
For second chances.

Every year I vow again
To beat The Claw
To the good stuff
And every year
I let what people think
Effect the way I act.
Someday soon,
I'll stop being embarrassed
For finding new ways
To value old things
Others have not 'seen.'
Instead of watching
The Claw devour them.
Someday soon
I will be the one
Reaching down
To liberate the unwanted
Because of the potential
I see in their hearts.
Someday.

National Poetry Month--Day Huit--Octopoem--The Claw--and more

Today it's an Octopoem. If you'd like to know more about this poetry form, go here. To explain today's poem:  During Brush & Bulky Pickup in this city, The Claw comes to crunch into people's old couches and giant screen TVs to lift them into the trash compactor. Highly entertaining at a very cheap price. Here it is:

The Claw

In the shell pink of the morning we hear The Claw's silvery jaws devouring the piles.

It's spring, when the buds are new, when the weight of winter has fled to the edges of the year

Down the street and up the lane it comes, roaring as it crunches, filling its belly.

Rain or the ubiquitous sunny days make no difference to The Claw's hunger.

We run out in sweats or jammies (luckily no towels) to watch the beast crunch into people's junk.

It devours couches and entertainment centers, boxes of flotsam, drifts of branches, broken chairs.

The Claw tempts Hoarders (not my husband) to release their broken bits to fill the maw.

We have in the past taken popcorn out to watch the spectacle. No time! It's coming!

And an extra, in the vein of our DEAR Dr. Seuss:

AVOCADOS

Avocados are the best

Better than the bestest rest

I would eat them in the rain (if it ever did that)

I would eat them on a train.

I'd spread a burger with their flesh

With everything the fruit does mesh

I'd eat them bathing at the beach

And on a cliff if I could reach

Avocados make me grin

They improve most all I have them in

The hubby thinks they're pond scum icky

He's just so incredibly picky

Avocados are super food

Potassium in them is really good

Bananas I need not consume

With avocados in the room

Give me elegance of gooey green

And I'll stop being hater mean

Avocados make my day

Unless they're 'off', what can I say?

National Poetry Month--Day Siete--Dodoitsu--Peeps

Today we're doing a Dodoitsu. I know. I had no idea what it was either. It sounds like something that went extinct in the 1800s...rofl. So I went here. This is my poem about Peeps:

PEEPS

Clearly peeps are not for food

Sugary tooth-rot not good

Always stale like foam or wood

But you can pose them.

Microwave blows them up well

They spark and scream like a bell

I'd flinch but I can't really tell

If they felt the pop.

National Poetry Month--Day Sechs--Pyramid Poems--Inchworm

Finally caught up kind of. So today it's a Pyramid Poem. If you want to know more about them, go here. Otherwise, here's mine:

Inchworm

Little inchworm

Little inchworm stitching

Little inchworm stitching happily

Little inchworm stitching happily along my leaf
