National Poetry Month--Day 22, 22--Acrostic Poems, Silences, Camping

Today we're doing Acrostic poems. If you can't figure out how to do them (there are a couple of ways) go here. Otherwise, below:

SILENCES

Secrets building behind her lips, explosive, corrosive, thrusting at the bars.

I have nowhere safe to let them free, she said, quivering. He doesn't want them.

Listen without judging, without defending, she begged. I could smell her fear.

Embrace instead of attacking, without forming me into a paper doll. Snip. Snip. Snip.

Need to trust the person with whom I've built a life, but can't.

Can't bear to break the silence, hoping to change things for the better, only to fail.

Enticing--the impotent reticence. It looks safe, but rots from the inside out.

Someday....

CAMPING

Creating home away from home from a couple of canvas walls and a torture cot

A sleeping bag the size of a coffin

Marshmallows stale enough to pound nails with

Peeing in a hole in a board that smells like a bog--if you make it

Itching from something you picked up tromping through the forest

Night sneaking animals and insects that can bite or give off incredible stench

Great fun and I'd do it again in a minute!

National Poetry Month--Day Achtzehn--Acrostic Poem--Christ--Haiku--Chivalry

When I wrote this I wasn't sure what Stephanie's poem for today is, but I try not to write on Sunday unless there's an ox in the mire somewhere. There being no extant male cattle, I'm doing this one on Saturday and using Saturday's poem form.

I apologize

For not believing in him

He came through like wind

He blew me away

With his largess and kindness

It was un-looked-for

Perhaps chivalry

Isn't gasping its last gasp

Now I should step up

And sneezy pollen

If you want to know what an Acrostic poem is go here. Okay, here is Sunday's Acrostic poem:

Christ came to calm our troubled hearts and call us home with Him.

He took upon Himself the mistakes and pains and disappointments of all the earth.

Raised from the dead to walk and talk with those who loved Him, then to other places to bless the people.

Intense pain caused blood to eke from every pore. Pain for our pain. Payment for things for which we are not proud.

Still He paid the price, even for those who doubt his very life. Even for those who care nothing for His sacrifice--who think their own way will be less rocky.

Then He rose, not simply to rest upon a throne, but to continue His work of salvation--of untangling the hopelessly tangled lines of our lives.

National Poetry Month--Day 25--Acrostic Poem--Punting Penguins and Other Problems

It's Acrostic Poem day. It's also Red-hat Day, Save the Frogs Day, Plumber Day, Dancing Day, and International Penguin Day. For me it's Hardware Store Day.

How about Save the Red-hatted Dancing Plumber Frogs Day?

Ronald the Peeper looked for his heart's dream
Endeav'ring to find her, make her part of his team
Daring to do what a froggy must do

He puffed out his chest like a bubble in blue
At last someone heard his great basso profundo
Thund'ring out there across the great mundo.
"There never was such a deep voice," he boasted.
Evalina the Poison Arrow frog wanted him roasted
"Dead he must be, for I can't stand his croakin'.

Decidedly dead," was the thought but not spoken
And why is that, Miss Green-Skinned perfection?
"Never mind," says she. "I don't like his diction.
Could somebody please put him out of my madness
I can't hear myself think--it cuts into my sadness."
"Now what could the terribly sad problem be?"
Groused Ronny Peeper, the ebullient "He."

"Pray keep your voice down, for it's better than mine,"
Lied Evalina the PA frog, testing the line.
"Unless you can call in a less strident timber
My ears are just bleeding and it makes me less limber."
But Ronny just knew his song would make sense
Evelina must just hear it, then she wouldn't be tense
Ronald then sang his frog lungs to a frazzle

For Evalina he would belt it, for her he would dazzle
Right down to the minute when Ronny passed out
Oh poor little frog, his wee heart was not stout
Grieving then filled Evalina's small heart
Saddness claimed her as she sought from the start.

Suddenly up jumped Ronny, his heart back to normal
A much-chastened frog was he, and much less formal
Very strong feelings for Evalina the Poison Arrow
Eked away down the dark river narrow
Rosy the Peeper was calling his name
Somewhere she waited 'cause they felt the same.

Moral of the story? Sometimes it's better to go for the less high maintenance frog.

(Please understand that this poem is born of a frustration with all this social distancing crap. I'm SO over it all, especially since I believe it to be a massive social experiment that is unconscionable and dreadful and a bunch more words that fill my head but I won't let gush forth. So there's this):

Please understand, I like penguins. They're cute little birds with a dedication I admire.
Understand too, that I'm sick of people telling me what I have to care about.
Not your job to tell me I must care about the global warming myth
That's my job if I wish it. If I want to get all misty about sea birds, I will.
I'm a big girl. I have hopes and dreams and agendas all my own.
Needing you to tell me what to do isn't a thing.
Go get someone else to boss around. As for me, I'll gladly go pick up trash in the park. On my own.

People seem to think they can order others to do their bidding because it's "correct."
End the idiocy! If you want to change that aspect of the world, do it yourself!
Natter on about saving the sea urchins on your own. I'll be the one out there doing it.
Go pay your own money to clean up streams and save weasels. I'm already there on my own.
Understand that it's not your job to be my adult nursemaid.
I know I'm not politically correct (another phrase for "I can say what I want to but you can't.")

Nope. But I do try to GOVERN MYSELF.
Sometimes I just envision drop-kicking a penguin into the water. It just makes me giggle.

Day 20--National Poetry Month--Acrostic Poem--My Elder Brother

Today we're doing Acrostic Poems (or ABC but I'm doing Acrostic). If you'd like to know more about them, go here. If you'd like to know more about Christ and his role in our lives, go here. In memory of Easter and the sacrifice of our Elder Brother, I give you my poem:

Just as once Christ took our part
Ever on the right hand of the Father
Satan, in opposition took the low road
Until he had lured away a host of the children
Salvation for them was no more

Christ forfeited His life and blood for us
Held high the lantern that we might see
Returning us to the Father's side, his goal
In perfect humility he bowed his head
Said, "Thy will, oh Lord be done."
Took the bitter cup and drank.

My sins He washed away with his blood
Yours, too, He took upon Himself

Every ill, unfairness, flaw he paid
Loving our neighbors the price

Do all you can to meet perfection, He asked.
Ever serve your fellow man
Return good for ill and kindness for evil

Bring back the lost, the wanderers astray
Right wrongs cropped up along the way
Overcome the taint if Satan's power
Take heart in Heavenly Father's plan
Help those who cannot help themselves
Endure with patience all which comes your way
Return with us to Father."

Acrostic Poem--Alaskan Love Song--National Poetry Month

We're doing acrostic poems today. To see how to do this, go here. I'm missing Alaska today as the temps climb back up into the triple digits here. It's a good thing I stocked up on memories while there. Take me back!

A land of majestic mountains scraping the sky in stark winter coats
Laboring to fill cans with salmon--then smoking some, the scent of hickory teasing tastebuds.
A place where the sun lets me climb rocky faces all night.

Swimming in snow melt--so bracing and so full of marine life.
Kayaking across the bay to fish in the still silences.
An eagle spreads its wings above us as it rides the thermals.
North of everything, in my mind, the wind blows full of fresh green beauty.

Empire of ice and wind and bone-chilling cold.
Xtreme living at it's most primeval.

Prepare for bears the size of trucks, and mosquitoes big as cows.
Eskimos and Klinkits smile with their whole bodies.
Rivers teaming with spawning salmon, like silver ribbons through green velvet.
Indian fishermen grin over their gill nets.
Everyone takes care of their neighbor, no questions asked.
Northern lights ripple across the heavens in a grand spectacle.
Cakes of salmon, so yummy and filling.
Ever in my dreams, so often in my thoughts. How I miss you!

Wingnuts, Cheese, and Chores--Acrostic Poems

It's Acrostic Poem day even though several people did it yesterday. They did haiku today and I did mine yesterday. Call me a rebel. Anywho, if you want to know more about this sort of poem, go here.

Can we please stop dusting?
Have you seen a dustless shelf, though you barely dusted it?
Or why bother making the bed?
Really, you're just going to get back in it.
Even the dishes...well okay. Wash the dishes. Otherwise, yech.
Still, time could be so much better spent reading.

When God invented these, He did a great thing.
I love that they hold things together without
Needing other tools but your fingers
Give that wingnut a crank and it's on.
Never is it too awful to get it back off
             Until you want it gone
Take a couple of fingers, twist it off.
Saves all kinds of time and it sounds silly.

Can I have a couple of slices of tastebud heaven?
Heap it up on chips or a tortilla for a comfy tongue blanket
Everything tastes better with cheese on it
Even Brussels sprouts are choke down-able with gooey goodness.
Slather some of that on spaghetti or chili or nearly everything
Except peanut butter sandwiches. Blech.

Day the 20th--Acrostic Poem--My Missionary Son

Again it's Sunday and I am diverging from the set schedule. What can I say? I'm a rebel. Anyway, this Sunday it's an Acrostic Poem using the first letter of each line to build on.
Here we go:

Makes me incredibly happy.
Yells, laughs, and photo-bombs every picture.

Misses us like we miss him.
Industrious and loving it.
Stays away from the cliff's edge.
Seeks out the low and those sitting in darkness.
Innovative--maybe he should be an engineer.
Opportunities make him happy, especially teaching ones.
Needs to lift, light, and serve.
Always positive.
Reading the scriptures is one of his favorites.
Year of teaching the gospel and one more to go.

Still not much for writing long letters.
Obedient to the Lord.
Never far from my mind.
